The California Triple Crown:
"A Journey to the Resurrection of Self"

Written By Tony Johnson for Crankin'Time
Congratulations to L.A. area cyclist Tony Johnson aka "Slim"
on his completion of the 2k9 California Triple Crown Series.

Crankin'Time Cycling Magazine was privileged to get an
interview with the newly crowned endurance rider in between
his hectic work and performance schedule.

Crankin'TIME: Which of the three California Triple
Crown double centuries did you complete?

Tony J: "The Davis Double, The Grand Tour and the Hemet
Double Century"

Crankin'TIME: Which one of the doubles would you say
was the hardest for you?

Tony J
: "Davis Double was by far the hardest for me!"

Crankin'TIME: Which one of these rides was the
most fun?

Tony J
: "The LA Wheelmen's Grand Tour was the most fun.  Their SAG team was the best, they also had the best prepared meals."

Crankin'TIME: Which double century was the most challenging for you?

Tony J
: "The Davis Double because it was 107 degrees hot, this made it extremely hot. Then we ran into what was called 'Cobb Mountain' and Resurrection."

Crankin'TIME:   Did the CTC experience leave an impact on you?

Tony J
: "Crankin'Time Cycling pretty much helped me out as far as doing group rides. Some of it I just got out and rode by myself and did a lot of hill climbing and learn how to maintain a steady cadence and speed."

Crankin'TIME:   Would you recommend anyone going for the CTC experience?

Tony J
: "Most definitely"

Crankin'TIME: Was there anything funny that happened on any of the rides?

Tony J
: "Well it was funny to just sit back and watch everybody struggle on Cobb Mountain trying to conquer that steep climb."

Crankin'TIME:  Was there anything that scared you on any of these CTC rides?

Tony J
: "Davis was the scariest for me. After Resurrection Mountain there was a 10-mile stretch of narrow road that had no street lights. There was no room for error."

Crankin'TIME: Is there anything that you would recommend to anyone contemplating going for the California Triple Crown?

Tony J
: "YES. If you're planning on doing your triple crown now is the time to work on your endurance, how to ride 25 to 30 miles at a time without stopping, drink a lot of electrolytes, maintain your cadence and speed, with what I experienced it took me 3 times to get it right by bringing down my riding time.  So if anybody wants to work out I would be glad to work out with you. HOLLA!!!"

I AM NOW AN OFFICIAL TRIPLE CROWNER
